December 21th 2007 / Is a National Heath Care System Constitutional?

How about we go back to the Constitution of the United States and use that as a frame of reference?  Oh wait, that's silly.  We wouldn't want to go back to the original governing document, would we?  It might say something about limiting the Federal Government's Power/Authority.  The states should create their own policies, and the federal government is supposed to protect us.  That's right, you Socialists might not like that much.  If an individual state elects to provide some sort of government run health care program, good for them.  That's how our system is supposed to work.  Let's see how well that works first.  If other states follow their lead, that's fine too.  I'll simply move to another state that doesn't want to tax me to pay for someone else's care.  The Free Market System (although cruel at times) is the way we should go.  Am I suggesting that the system we have is perfect? No way.  It breads corruption and fosters greed.  But "giving" the authority to the Federal Government is not the answer.  Hello.... corruption/greed...   Am I suggesting that we (as fellow humans) are void of any moral/ethical responsibility to look out for each other?  Not at all.  Of course, we should take care of the poor.  We should provide love/care to all people.  However, I simply believe this should be done on a voluntary basis (not via a government run, bureaucratic machine).

August 27th 2007 / Rolling in Their Graves?

Prolog:    I don't claim to be some sort of "blogist" (should that actually be a word).  Yet, I find myself compelled to provide some sort of contribution to the rapid expansion of the blogosphere.  This is my very first official blog, and I want to provide some sort of insightful statement (or two) that will stimulate additional fantastic limrics of thought.  Or at least.... I hope this provides some redeeming informative or entertainment value for someone.  Enjoy!

I once thought that maybe our fore fathers would be rolling in their graves (should they be looking down on us...observing how our country has twisted the institutions they gave birth to, and the Constitution they wrote for this great land).  Then I consider that maybe, just maybe, this is exactly what they envisioned.  You may laugh at that statement thinking, "Yeah Right! This guy is nuts to think that they would have wanted a system where most politicians' decisions are dictated by the pocket books of special interest groups".

While I don't exactly think the level of corruption we see today is something the fore fathers aspired to.  I do think were hoping for the kind of stalemate we often mock and criticize.  I hear statements like "Do-Nothing Congress", and "Lame Duck President", and I think "Wow, that's pretty harsh...but kind of true".  Then I begin to think about what was important to our founding fathers.  They were very concerned about "power", and didn't want any one point of view to gain too much momentum.

Opposition is exactly what our fore fathers wanted.  You'll find that I'm not a big fan of the two party system we experience today. Yet, I do think there is some merit to having polarization in politics. It's easy to play Monday morning quarterback, and critique the decisions of our public servants.  It's easy to say, "these guys are a joke.... they never get anything done".  However, I wouldn't want their jobs and neither would most of you.

While we like to criticize and critique these individuals' decisions or lack of productivity, we must realize that they system was designed to be intentionally difficult to get anything done.  We should consider that their inability to get any real work done, is the anticipated result of the beautiful system our fore fathers put into motion.

I'm not saying we shouldn't demand that our public servants do exactly what they're chartered to do.....  Represent the peoples' interests.  Nor am I trying to provide them with justification for not getting anything done.  I'm simply suggesting that our founding fathers wanted it to be this way.  Let's just hope that the views our representatives represent are that of the mainstream public (not those of the highest bidding, largest, or most organized special interest group).
